Mixtape l Branding
The Mixtape project began with creating three playlists on Spotify, curated in a way that describes myself in some way.
The challenge was to create a cover design for each mixtape using Mitch Goldstein’s obstruction picker tool here.
Mixtape 01: New Journey
A collection of songs about the memory of new beginning of the life in the United States.
Obstructions:
Formal: Only triangles
Methodological: Use your transportation
Conceptual: Make it fake
This playlist includes the collection of the songs I listened to during my initial years in the United
States. Most of the time I listened to them when I was driving. The methodological obstruction was
to use my transportation, so I used my car. I made a triangle pattern using my car as the formal
obstruction was to only use triangles; the triangle also symbolizes a play button. American flag colors
are used for the overall design, representing American songs and a beginning of an American life.
Mixtape 02: Time Flies
A collection of songs about the golden memory of my life in the United States.
Obstructions:
Formal: Use numbers
Methodological: Do it accidentally
Conceptual: Make it false
This playlist includes the songs I continued to listen to, and I am still listening to. These songs remind me
of the time I started feeling settled down in the United States. I started connecting myself with
the songs and the country, I started feeling like being a part of this country. The feeling of being settled
made me realize that life is golden. the time I am living in is golden. I felt that the time was running
faster than it was before.
As the collection of these songs reminds me of my golden time and makes me feel how the years
passed quickly, I used the years these songs were released. And the formal obstruction was also to use
only numbers. The golden yellow color symbolizes the golden time of my life.
Mixtape 03: Ups & Downs
A collection of songs about that reminds me of the ups and downs of my life.
Obstructions:
Formal: 100% black + 100% white
Methodological: Do not use your brain
Conceptual: Make it smart
I am emotionally connected with the songs in this playlist. These songs are motivational, that shows that
every person is unique and special. It shows the struggles of people that are directly connected with
the story of my life. The songs remind me of the ups and downs of my life. They encourage me every
time I listen to them.
Since the songs remind me of the ups and downs of my life and the formal obstruction is to make
black and white, I thought that the black and white colors perfectly symbolize the dark and light times
of my life. The methodological obstruction was, do not use your brain and so the very first thing I
visualized was just black and white colors next to each other.
